OOTW: Holiday Edition

by Monday, December 26, 2016
First off, I apologize for the lack of posts the last two weeks, my laptop broke and lost everything on my hard drive, which contained the contents of the scheduled posts! I am looking into trying to salvage what I can from the hard drive but in the mean time, the show must go on! This week I decided to do another Outfit of the Week(end) post detailing what I wore for the Christmas weekend, as well as what I will most likely be wearing for the upcoming New Year's Eve!
Please read through to the end for an upcoming announcement!!

 Thursday: Friend's Proposal

☀️46°

My longtime friend from high school was planning to propose to his girlfriend the day before Christmas Eve, so he wanted us all to be there. We made plans to go for drinks before and walk around the El Paso San Jacinto Plaza which was decorated with lights and Christmas decorations because that's where he wanted to do it. It was so cute and so sweet!

I'll admit, I didn't want to wear my glasses because I'm still adjusting to wearing them 24/7, but I wanted to be able to actually see the proposal, and I haven't gotten contacts yet, so I gave in. Because this night was going to be a good one, I decided to wear an outfit I had planned for another event but never got to wear after all. I had originally paired this outfit with black knit tights and a brown knot choker, but the knee-high socks look much better, and I still had a hold of my roommate's choker so I took advantage of it. It was slightly cold outside but my sweater was so thick it kept me warm, but once we got to the bar inside I was boiling! It was hard to find that balance with an outfit like this but I survived. (Lipstick: Marc Jacob's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang")

Friday: Christmas Eve
☀️55°

I'm Mexican, so we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Normally we have a huge gathering with lots of family members, but this year we decided to keep it small with just my immediate family (which is still rather large in general) so I decided to keep my outfit casual. I think this is probably my favorite outfit of the entire weekend, not just because it was so comfy, but because it includes a lot of my personal favorites. I love doing my hair in a half-bun, I love love love those combat boots (stolen from my mom), and I love my roommate's choker. Fun fact about the flannel: I actually bought that shirt in the men's section, and I don't regret it! (Lipstick: Mac "Instigator.")

Saturday: Christmas Day
☀️63°

Since the day before had been very casual at home, I decided Christmas day visiting other's homes would be a formal occasion. I love the color of this dress, it's so bright and I wanted something that stood out from the regular Christmas reds and greens.

This dress is actually my bridesmaid dress from my best friend's wedding earlier in September! She let all her bridesmaids choose their own dress as long as they were blue so her entire bridal party were various different hues of blue, it was so cool. She gave us the freedom to choose our own dresses because she wanted us to actually want to wear our bridesmaids dresses again, so that's exactly what I did! These nude wedges are probably some of my favorite shoes to wear ever; I've broken them in so well I can probably run a marathon in them. Also, fun fact, the necklace I had was a little too short for my liking, so I linked 3 large paper clips together and fastened the necklace to them to make it longer! Hey, whatever works to get the look! (Lipstick: City Color Cosmetics "Bare With Me").

**Upcoming Saturday** New Year's Eve
Weather forecast: ☀️46°

When it comes to New Year's, I am all about my motto: go big or go home!! No point in showing out when you don't do it all the way through! There are two things I will never get tired of no matter how tacky they may seem: leopard print, and thigh-high boots. I'm obsessed!! Both immediately spice up any plain outfit - try it out and you'll see I'm right! Fun fact: I actually got inspired by this outfit from my Bitmoji character! I also decided to add cat ears because to me cat ears always seem like the perfect fun party piece. (Lipstick: Nars "Cruella").

My outfit for NYE might change based on plans; right now I'm anticipating simply going out bar hopping with friends but if I end up seeing Deadmau5 that night with my sister, my outfit will definitely change! I'm not sure yet if that will happen, so we'll see!

And while we're on the subject of New Year's, Red Raider Runway's upcoming Business Attire Series will feature various different posts on how to dress for business, throughout the entire month of January! There is no better time like the beginning of a new year to get pointers on how to make your work attire match your work ethic! Please stay tuned and look forward to that starting next week!

Spotted Trend: Liquid Glitter Phone Cases

by Monday, December 05, 2016
I'm a sucker for phone cases, and a firm believer that you can never have enough. I always have a few options of cases I can switch out in case one looks better for a particular outfit or event. After all, we carry our phones with us literally everywhere we go, so why not make sure it looks just as good as we do?
My friend Lett Hernandez recently said how you take care of your phone is a reflection of who you are - and I have to say I completely agree. If your phone has lots of cracks in it or is constantly dying because you don't charge it fully, what does that say about how you take care of yourself? Phones are no longer an "option" in our lives and schedules, but a vital necessity, it should be treated with such importance. However, that doesn't mean we can't style it up while we're at it.
Over the past few months, I started noticing a particular phone case trend amongst friends, acquaintances, and even passersby. It was the liquid glitter phone case.

I saw various different types of girls owning this type of phone case: business women, sorority girls, athletes, etc. so I knew this trend did not just appeal to one particular type of woman.

Common popular phone cases usually have some sort of glitter or sparkle. Others are clear and minimalistic to keep the aesthetic of the iPhone itself. This liquid phone case can combine both of those popular trends into one phone case together. When asked why she felt compelled to buy a case like this, Jackie Castanon said, "It's pink and it's glitter." As a very social person, she also said the phone case was a great conversation starter at checkout lines and constantly received compliments for the case.

However, the main appeal for this type of phone case is its similarity to a snow globe; when shaken, glitter gently floats down slowly. This makes the case not just visually appealing but also interactive. Alyssa Riojas said, "The sparkles attracted me towards the case, as well as the soothing effect it has when you sway the case back and forth."

Of course, some obvious risks with this type of case involves the liquid in them. If the phone is dropped and the case cracks, the liquid can seep out onto the phone and ruin it. "Some say the liquid in the case can have acid affects on skin which is dangerous, but it's probably a rumor," said Riojas. That is where responsibility of your phone comes in again. I don't drop my phone a lot so I knew this would not be a major problem or risk I would face often.

Many brands from Forever 21 to Kate Spade offer this type of case, so the prices can range from $8 to $50 depending on where you get it from. However, a certain brand type does not change the quality or aesthetic of the overall case design which means you can opt for a cheaper version and still receive the same type of compliments! Like most phone cases, these cases can also have designs on them, like quotes or art. Riojas said aside from the sparkles, the quote on her case also caught her attention. These designs can set your phone apart from others who have similar ones to maintain your individual personality!

It should be noted that the extra space required for the liquid does make the case a lot thicker. Some people don't like that because they like the sleekness of the iPhone, especially the naked iPhone (sexy yet risky!) However, the thickness of the phone case is actually my personal favorite aspect of the liquid phone case. It adds extra surface area to grip and hold the phone, which is beneficial to preventing slips or falls.

Since I began noticing this trend of phone cases, the number of cases I have spotted around town have only increased, which means the style has gained more popularity! As an avid phone case lover and collector, I am curious to see which trend will catch on next!

OOTW: Thanksgiving Weekend

by Monday, November 28, 2016
Isn't it strange how every year we dress up for the holidays just to stand around the kitchen and eat? This year I suggested to my mom that we forego dressing up and showing up to our Thanksgiving dinner in pajamas...but she didn't go for it! I'm not sure why, she kept dodging my questions!, but I am going to try and convince her for Christmas though. Hopefully I'll get more people on my side to convince her this time around!

So because I had to dress up, I decided to do a series of OOTD's, or "Outfit of the Day"s for this past Thanksgiving weekend because it was quite eventful. These are my Outfits of the Week(end)! I have also included where I got my articles from if possible just to show that where you get your clothes from doesn't matter as long as you make it look good.

☀️73°
Thanksgiving Parade

Every year my hometown has a tradition of putting on a local parade. It started at 10am but it gets packed so my family and I knew to be there by 8am to get good seats. It was a little windy and chilly so I made sure to keep warm enough with light layers. I almost wore heeled boots but I'm so glad I opted for my go-to brown boots instead because I ended up walking for hours to find a spot to sit!

☀️70°
Thanksgiving Dinner

After the parade, I had plenty of time to nap and get ready for dinner! Since my mom shot down my PJs suggestion, I was going to go all out looking nice for dinner. I've always known Charlotte Russe was my favorite store (I just love their affordable selection!) but seeing it laid out in plain text that I'm dressed head-to-toe in CR is a little embarrassing! I should also point out that this outfit was recently purchased to be worn as my Halloween costume, so I wanted to get good use out of it a second time!

☀️66°
Black Friday

I've never been Black Friday shopping, ever. But this year I really needed a sturdy, supportive backpack that could hold all my stuff because the 2 I had were falling apart! So I asked my grandma if she could buy me one I had been eyeing at Victoria's Secret PINK and she said yes. I figured going on Black Friday would be ideal because there would probably be sales that we could take advantage of. But I forgot that my grandma is a major shopaholic, so we didn't just go to one store! After 6 hours of shopping in purple high-heeled boots, my feet were killing me! I know I shouldn't have worn them, but they are my mom's boots and every time I come into town to visit, I always try to take advantage of the selection of shoes my mom has and wear them because I can't wear them when I'm back in Lubbock! The boots from this outfit are not the only thing borrowed though; the shirt and cardigan are both my roommate's as well! I absolutely love the edginess of the cardigan and t-shirt design. I'm notorious for borrowing people's stuff, no shame!

☀️64°
Friendsgiving

This year my sister decided to throw a "Friendsgiving" dinner for her close friends on Saturday. I knew it was going to be a more casual event than actual Thanksgiving, but I still wanted to dress up somewhat. Much like my previous outfit, the cardigan was borrowed from my roommate and the shoes and earrings were my mom's! I can't help it, I like to switch up my usual looks with different pieces I can't normally wear!

It was a great weekend visiting my hometown and playing around with different looks. In the past I never really wore cardigans but this fall they have really become a staple of mine. I'll probably continue doing OOTW posts for special holiday weeks!

Student Feature: Sara Hunter

by Monday, November 14, 2016
This month's student feature is such a treat, I'm obsessed with her look. Sara Hunter is a freshman theatre acting major from a small town outside of Amarillo called Vega, Texas. What first caught my eye was her eclectic style, but the best part about her look was the confidence she rocked. Red Raider Runway is all about promoting everyone's individual style and showing that anyone can pull off whatever look as long as it's done with confidence. Sara's style not only exudes that, but shows that everything is not always what it seems...

☀️61°
Sara shines in this bright red long sleeved shirt, with a black skirt and black suspenders/harness around her waist. Her cat-knee tights, flower choker, and hair buns completely play up the look while her black knot choker and gold strapped heels add just the right amount of chic to the balance the overall look.

Sara said her style varies day to day from edgy, modern, grunge, 90s, etc. depending on what she's feeling like. Sara not only experiments with articles of clothing, but also wigs! She currently has about 20 wigs.

☀️75°
Sara is not afraid of a pop of color! She is wearing a light colored shirt with a bright pink and purple ombre faded knee-length skirt; brightest of all is her long blue wig! Accessories like a flower crown, a fuzzy pink bracelet, and layered necklaces complete her look.

When it comes to early morning classes, Sara had it all figured out. "Most days if I wake up late I throw on a wig, t-shirt, and jeans but I try to look put together. I plan an outfit the night before if I actually want to look nice the next day," said Sara. "It really depends on how I'm feeling that day."

☀️61°
While this outfit seems muted with a white cut off crop top and pale jeans, Sara expertly contrasts it with black lipstick, a black choker, and heels, and Sara still manages a pop of color with green tipped hair.

"I used to watch shows like 'What Not to Wear' with my grandma when I was growing up. She took me shopping and inspired me to like fashion as well. Now I take inspiration from cosplay, Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest," Sara said. I asked what advice she had for others trying to cultivate their own style and she encouraged everyone to draw inspiration from everywhere. "If you see something you like, keep it in mind. Try making mental maps of your clothes based on what theme you're going for to create new looks," she said.

☀️57°
Going for a darker look on a colder day, Sara is wearing a black leather vest over a dark red long sleeved shirt and black skirt. She is wearing patterned tights and black studded boots. Her accessories include her staples: a wig, short white cropped hair, a flower crown, a tattoo choker and a decorative septum ring.

Fall is Sara's favorite season so layers are essential and part of her usual looks. She says the layers build up depending on how cold it is that morning.

☀️70°
Sara struts in a cut off tee, her favorite jean jacket covered in pins and buttons, a choker, dark blue jeans, and strappy clogs. Her favorite article of clothing is her jean jacket, pictured above. "I added all of my pins, buttons, and awards so it feels really personalized."

Sara mixed certain staples with unique pieces like her wigs to keep things fresh yet casual when she wanted to be. Her ever-changing style shows that no one has to confine themselves to a certain style. It is all about wearing whatever you feel comfortable in and owning it with confidence. Hopefully her style can inspire others to take more risks while dressing up on campus!

Student Features: Around Campus

by Wednesday, November 09, 2016
This past week I decided to snap pics of various Red Raiders I saw looking cute around campus just to showcase all the stylish students we have at Tech!

 ☀️ 75°
Sara Sanchez; senior; double major in English and Electronic Media & Communications; Austin, TX

Sara would describe her style as "kind of bummy." She likes to look cute but still dress for comfort. Kudos to Sara for managing to stay comfy and casual while still looking cute!

☀️88°
Bianca Anzures; senior; Criminology major; Corpus Christi, TX

Bianca said she doesn't really have a favorite store because she's been on a budget and can't shop as much as she'd like, but lately she's been going to Charlotte Russe and Plato's - which is smart if on a budget because those stores are always budget friendly with their sales!

☀️68°
Celeste Roberts; junior; Education major; Round Rock, TX

Despite the gloomy weather throughout the day, Celeste wears an oversized plaid dress and a jacket to navigate through campus in the cold weather.

☀️70°
Raquel Roulin; senior; Public Relations major; Sugarland, TX

Raquel said she actually wears this dress backwards because the original front has a straight neckline and she felt it wasn't adding enough to her look, so she switches it over to the back for a v-neckline. What an innovative idea!

☀️70°
Hanna Elmi; junior; Marketing major; Arlington, TX

Hanna is wearing an oversized white t-shirt as a dress with a cut made on the collar for a small v-neckline. She paired the dress with a green flannel shirt and white sneakers. Stylish and adjustable enough for the changing weather!

This is definitely something I would love to do again whenever one specific student is not being featured. This Or That?: Eyeliners

by Friday, November 04, 2016
When it comes to eyeliner, finding what works best for you can be a little frustrating and overwhelming. Trying to do a cat-eye can result in raccoon eye makeup if you're not using the right product. So I've compiled a small guide to help differentiate the types of products in order to decide which would be best for you.

Liner Pencil
Pictured: Sumita Eyeliner Pencil

Let's start with the basics - eyeliner pencils were my go-to since I was an angsty teen. If you're going for the dark raccoon look, or making broad lines, this is the eyeliner for you. But if you're trying to do a fine point cat eye then this type of liner is not your friend. The point is too thick and dull for any sort of precision tip, no matter how many times you try to sharpen it to its finest point. Plus, if you don't have a sharpener, you're SOL. Sometimes I will use a pencil liner to draw the initial line on my eyelid, then use a more precise liner to finish out the tips of a cat-eye wing, so that's always an option. And sometimes cat-eye just isn't your thing so you don't have to worry about fine-tips!

Pros:
+Covers more surface area quicker
+Easy to remove if you mess up (in comparison to the other types)
+Easy to apply on the waterline

Cons:
-Dull tip
-Not good for precise, thin tips
-Smudges easier

Additional tools needed: Sharpener

Liquid Liner
Pictured: Sumita Liquid Eyeliner; Wet N Wild H2O PROOF Liquid Eyeliner

Possibly one of the most intimidating eyeliners is liquid liner. I was scared to touch this product for years before I finally gave it a try. I'm not going to lie - it takes lots of practice to get the hang of it. But damn do you look good once you do. As soon as I nailed the liquid liner stroke, my eyeliner compliments spiked tremendously. The key to liquid liner is to start off as firm as possible and make sure you have a steady hand. If your hand shakes, it will show up on your lids in the form of bumpy, wavy lines.
Finding a good eyeliner that works for you can be tough depending on the type of brush you like. Some liquid liners have a longer, more flexible brush that allows for curvier flicks, while other brushes are a little firmer and allow for more control. I have one of each, both pictured. The Wet N Wild liner brush is more flimsy, so I know if I'm going to be using it, I gotta roll with whatever the brush wants and it's generally going to look a bit more dramatic. But if I want a more specific cat-eye look or a smaller tip, I will use the Sumita liner. Both are good, personally.
Liquid liner also lasts the longest then all other liners, in my experience. But it can start to get flaky if left on too long and is stubborn to take off, even if not water proof. But trust me on this, if a liquid liner says it's water proof, you better have some makeup remover wipes handy to clean up any mistakes because a little water is not going to make it budge!

Pros:
+Most dramatic looking
+Long lasting
+Finest tip precision
+Dries matte

Cons:
-Unpredictable
-Not forgiving
-Stubborn to remove
-Flaky

Additional Tools Needed: Confidence

Gel Liner
Pictured: Estee Lauder Gel Eyeliner; Ecotools Brush

I love gel liner. I think it's a great medium between a pencil and liquid liner. In my opinion, gel liner is easiest and it offers the most control out of all the options. You need a small brush to apply it. Because you're using a small brush, it offers maximum control and precision. The brush is both thick enough to make good broad lines, and small enough to make precise tips for a wings. It's the best of both worlds. The key thing is to make sure you have a good brush because that can make or break it!! Just make sure you don't lose the brush otherwise you can't use your product either.
Depending on which brand you get, the liner can either be super easy to remove (aka very smudgy) or nearly impossible to take off. My absolute favorite gel liner was from Mary Kay, but it came with a terrible brush applicator that constantly dried up and I hated it. But it was SO water and smudge proof, I could literally wear the same coat for days and not have to reapply once, or have a single smudge out of place!! The gel liner I use now is Estee Lauder and they have a really great brush, but their product also smudges a lot easier, so it's a give and take.
The worst part about having a gel liner is that the product itself can begin to dry out so it gets harder to apply it on your brush and onto your lids. But overall, I think gel liners are so great, especially for those trying to work on their cat eye look but haven't felt brave enough to try liquid liners yet.

Pros:
+Easy to apply
+Easy to apply on waterline
+Offers the most control
+Covers a good surface area quickly
+Versatile
+Fine precision
+Dries on matte
+Certain brands can be 100% Smudge/Water Proof

Cons:
-Needs a good brush
-Product can dry out

Additional Tools Needed: Small brush applicator

Finding the right eyeliner for you can be a trial and error. I still find myself switching out different types because there is no one perfect one. Sometimes I like to mix my products together to get the best effect, like mentioned above with my pencil liner. I'll usually draw on my cat-eye with a liquid liner for a big wing, and then use the pencil to line my waterline for a darker, more dramatic look when I'm going out. Otherwise I won't line my waterline at all for a "daytime" look. Or if I want to go less dramatic and have more casual wing, I'll use the gel liner for every day use.

But at the end of the day, wings are not the end-all be-all of eyeliner. Sometimes wings may not be your style. Like my roommate, no matter how thin we used the liquid liner, we felt the winged look just didn't suit her, so she uses the pencil to line her eyes, sometimes just the top, or just the waterline (or both), and it suits her just fine. Don't think that you need any product that doesn't serve its purpose for your style.

First Student Feature: Jacqueline Valdez!

by Saturday, October 22, 2016
Welcome to the main event of this website: the student features! The first Red Raider feature is Jacqueline Valdez! She is a Spanish major from Corpus Christi, TX and is graduating this December!

☀️ 70°F
Jackie stands on the steps of the library wearing a black and white striped t-shirt dress with a knit cardigan and black lace-up Vans.

Given that Lubbock's weather is unpredictable, it can be hard to dress to accommodate the weather which can change sporadically throughout the day. Jackie said she doesn't really look at the temperature to dress accordingly and all she needs is a light jacket to wear or carry around if it gets hot.

☀️ 70°F
Jackie is wearing a red and black flannel shirt, lightwash skinny jeans, and nude lace up heeled booties.

Even if she only has one class for the day, Jackie still makes an effort to dress up for classes. "It just makes me feel better," she said. "The only time I don't dress up is if I'm sick. If I'm sick, I don't care. Otherwise I try."

☀️ 75°F
Jackie proudly throws her guns up in front of the Will Rogers statue in a white v-neck tee, distressed lightwash boyfriend jeans with the cuffs rolled up, and her black lace up Vans. Completing the look is her grey Tech hat, perfect for showing off her school spirit before game day.

When asked what favorite article of clothing she owns, Jackie said it would have to be her new black thigh high boots because they add spice to her wardrobe.

Jackie maintained a cute and casual look in these staples by adding a twist. Small details like bootie heels or boyfriend jeans instead of the usual skinny jeans are what kept these casual outfits fresh and unique to her style.

Going Ombre: Hair Care

by Tuesday, October 18, 2016

As I mentioned in my first grandma haul post, my grandma always said I had "virgin hair" because I never did anything drastic to it. In high school I had no problem cutting my hair short on a whim or because a role in a play required it, but after I graduated, I stopped cutting my hair for some reason. Between 2008 to 2016 I can recall the number of haircuts I got: TWO. Thus, the reign of my "majestic" hair was born.

My extremely long hair became one of my most defining features. When straightened it went past my elbows, and when curled it was so voluminous.

But, as much as I loved it, after a while I started getting bored with it. I had had it the same length for years and even though I said I would cut it, I never did. Even small trims had me crying for those two inches back, so I realized my hair had become some sort of security blanket. In high school I had no problems with chopping it off whenever, but now I couldn't even fathom the thought. I didn't like that I had become so dependent on my hair as such a crucial part of my identity, so I vowed to change it up somehow. I talked about going ombre for so long, the trend had died out by the time I finally went through with it, but I didn't care - I was glad I finally pushed myself out of my comfort zone. Not only did I color my hair, but I chopped a good few inches off too.

Because I hadn't done much to my hair before, it picked up the color right away. When I got out of the hair salon my sister told me, "Do you know how many girls would kill for that color on the first try?"

But as good as it looked, it didn't feel so good. My hair felt so dry and damaged, and for the first few showers, it was so stringy and spongy, I was so afraid pulling on my hair too hard would make it fall apart. I worried that I had just made the biggest mistake ever, and it was too late to take it back.

So I quickly sprung into action, googling products and home remedies that would help me make my hair healthy again without having to sacrifice another six inches. I'll admit, aside from heat protectant, hair maintenance was not high on my list of priorities so I knew nothing about these basic products, until now. having long hair required so little maintenance aside from trimming split ends so this was all new to me.

The first step in getting some moisture back into my hair was leave-in conditioner.

Garnier Whole Blends Smoothing Leave-In Conditioner | Infusium23 Moisture Replenisher Leave-In Treatment
I had never used leave in conditioner before, but once I started using it I definitely noticed a difference in my hair right away. I bought the Garnier Whole Blends leave-in conditioner from the store at first, but then I remembered my mom had given me a leave-in treatment a month before I dyed my hair. She works in the IT department of a cosmetics store so she got me some of the products they have, and this Infusium23 was essentially the same thing.
After alternating between both products, I personally prefer the spray leave-in treatment my mom got me. It's lighter on my hair. Sometimes I feel like the leave-in conditioner weighs my wet hair down a little more no matter how small the dollop in my hands is. The conditioner also seems to clump my hair together in strings so when it dries, my hair is dried in crispy strings. So the spray treatment does a better job of spreading its product in my hair without clumping and it does make my hair feel more relaxed. It also smells better too.

The next product is for when my hair finally dry.
Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil

The lady who did my hair gave me this styling oil for free and I legitimately think it was because she knew she damaged my hair so this was her way of trying to make it up to me. (She also offered me two free deep-conditions afterward, which further cements my suspicion that she knew she messed up). I used to be so against styling oils because I felt like it would make my hair feel greasier sooner, but this restorative oil works wonders for the ends of my hair because the ends are what need the most moisture.  I don't use this oil every day because I'm stingy and don't want to run out and have to go buy another one right away, but I definitely make sure to use it when I don't straighten or curl my hair so it doesn't look so dry or frizzy.

L'Oreal Frizz Vanisher Cream

I've had this frizz control cream since before I dyed my hair, but when I first used it I hated it because I felt like it was too greasy, but I just had portion control problems. Once I learned to use smaller amounts, it worked a lot better. This is meant to be used on your hair before you blow dry it so it'll dry with a lot less frizz. I never used it before when I had my long hair but I do use it when I'm straightening my ombre hair because it makes me feel like it minimizes the frizz in my damaged hair. Maybe it's just psychological and it doesn't actually minimize the frizz but my hair does feel smoother when I use it so I keep using it.

Paul Mitchell Heat Seal

As I said before, heat protectant was really the only hair product that I used regularly before dying my hair, and nothing has changed now. I always alternate and try different brands' heat protectants, and there hasn't been a heat protectant that I haven't liked. I've tried Tresemme's (my personal fave), It's a 10, Herbal Essences, Paul Mitchell, and Not Your Mother's. I used to focus on the top of my head to make sure the "healthier" hair stayed protected and to prevent frizz, but now I focus my attention on the lower half as usual because those are the driest and I'm not trying to cause more damage to it. Whenever I forget to use heat protectant, I get terrified that my hair will break off like this girl's did.

However, the number one product that has helped my hair get healthier is actually not a hair product at all. It is extra virgin olive oil. Every hair stylist I've been to used to always say that putting olive oil in my hair would make it shinier and healthier and now I absolutely SWEAR BY IT.

Before I take a shower, I will put olive oil in my hair and let it soak up in a bun for a few hours while I go about my business, doing my homework, washing the dishes, etc. Once I feel that my hair has absorbed the moisture enough, I rinse it off in the shower. At first, your hair feels really coarse from all the oil in it, but don't fret - as soon as I wash my hair with (color protecting) shampoo, it immediately feels soft and refreshed. And by the time I get to the conditioner, my hair feels softer than ever and it no longer feels stringy or spongy like it first did when I dyed it.

The only thing I would advise if you use olive oil in your hair and you shed a lot (like I do) is to unclog your drain frequently and as soon as possible, otherwise the hair that gets caught in there has olive oil buildup which will make your tub flood sooner and the oil can also start to smell. So just make sure you pick your hair out more frequently than you normally would to avoid that mess!

All the products in the world have not been as effective as olive oil has been on my hair. I can see actual tangible results from the oil. Some people like to use coconut oil as well, but olive oil is way cheaper and still achieves the same great results. The drier problem areas of my hair have gotten significantly smaller and way less damaged because when I'm treating my hair with the oil, I focus on those areas closely and overall my hair feels so much healthier the more I use it.

Overall, despite the extra time, effort, and money required to upkeep my hair, I'm still really happy that I finally tried something new. One of the things I hate most is wondering "what if" or "if only" so I decided to stop wondering what it would be like to do something new to my hair and try ombre hair. I'm still learning how to care for my hair as I go, but this post and these products were focused mainly on how to repair damaged hair and add moisture into it again, not necessarily about color maintenance. Maybe once I get my hair back to 100% health and learn to maintain it more, I will feel brave enough to do something bolder, like dye it a pastel color which has always been a dream of mine. But for now I'm happy with my ombre hair - I just want it to get long again because the length is something I do miss.
